Bingo operator Rank Group has showed signs of optimism as bingo and casino business seem to be growing after twelve difficult months. Also, the company is pleased with changes to come concerning gaming regulations and VAT rulings. Revenue in Grosvenor Casino grew 14 per cent while revenue in Mecca Bingo went up 2 per cent, compared with 2007.
Last year, Rank suffered the effects of the smoking ban and the Gambling Act, and revenues went down 8 per cent in one year. In the last six weeks, spending per head increased, which compensates the decline in attendances.
“While customers are cutting back on visits and spending, bingo and casino were small-ticket items less vulnerable to economic downturn than other spending.”, Ian Burke, Rank Chief Executive said. “There are lots of things they can postpone before they start postponing their trips to bingos and casinos.”
The government is expected to review gaming machines policies, allowing eight gaming machines instead of four at bingo halls. Also, Rank’s claim on VAT could mean £83 million for the company.
