Slots could affect bingo business

According to bingo experts, legalized slots in Pittsburgh could affect bingo games sponsored by churches, volunteer fire departments and many other nonprofit groups. David Ross, public policy officer for the Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations, says such organizations have no resources to battle the inevitable losses caused by slots.

"We're eight or nine minutes from downtown Pittsburgh, so you just can't compete with those casinos -- the flashing lights and the big prizes and the atmosphere and a little bit of drinking", said Tim Jarrett, a member of the Undercliff Volunteer Fire Company.

Jarret is worried because bingo is the main source of money of the Company and it is already suffering because young people are not replacing older folks. Jarret says West Virginia is a good example of how legalized slots have taken a toll on local bingo games.

Nonprofits will have to wait and see what happens in Pittsburgh.
