Marty Mowl thought it was a Halloween prank. The president of Eagles Lodge 687 in Washington, Pa., was calling bingo just after 8 p.m. Monday when a man strolled into the crowded lodge wearing a "Scream" mask.

"I saw him walk in, and he just looked like someone coming to play bingo who happened to be wearing a Halloween costume,'' Mowl said. "But then we realized he wasn't dressing up for fun. He was serious.''

The white cloths and roses on the hotel conference room tables may have been typical, but the women seated at those tables were more likely to be cleaning the room than listening to a speaker.

The president of the Lindsay Bingo Bingo Charities Association hopes a proposal to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission will fly so the hall can operate past the next two months.Gary Preston said both revenue and attendance at the Needham Street establishment have fallen this year.Bingo Bingo's estimated revenue for this year - at $300,000 - comes in at about $100,000 less than previous years, says a news release from the Association.

A former bus driver has been named the best bingo caller in Scotland. Graeme Garioch beat off five other finalists to land the title of Scotland's Bingo Caller of the Year.His funny patter and slick number calling impressed judges at Monday night's final in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire.Graeme, 51, of Aberdeen, will now travel to London in November to compete against callers from England, Ireland and Wales to for the national title.

Several of the hundreds of patrons who visited the casino told reporters that the spiffy new video bingo machines -- the first of their kind in California -- were confusing them with too many flashing lights, changing graphics and blinking buttons.

But those same gamblers, a few of whom declined to reveal their names because they didn't want bosses to know how they spent a sick day or an extra long lunch break, all said they were having fun despite the chaos.

"I've spent more than a hundred dollars, and I'm still figuring it out," said Wilma Sandhu of Newark. "It's harder than slots, but it's fun. I like these. I'll come back some. Maybe if I drop enough money, I'll figure out what all these buttons do."

National Bingo Game

AFTER 45 years of playing bingo, an 81-year-old Watford great grandmother says she has got her money back at last, having won more than $20,000 at the Mecca Club in King Street.

The winner, who wants to remain anonymous, won a new National Bingo Game called Afternoon Delight, which was launched last month and will feature a $20,000 top prize every afternoon, from Monday to Friday.

As well as the $20,000, she won a $548 regional prize.
